Levitt loves_fearless females

Happy International Women’s Day! Today’s post celebrates all the fearless females out there who are courageously breaking barriers—including the ladies of Flor de Toloache, headliners of the 2019 Levitt National Tour! As New York’s first and only all-female mariachi group, GRAMMY-winning Flor de Toloache is fearlessly pushing the genre’s boundaries with their electrifying fusions of mariachi, jazz, salsa, pop and more. Their bold artistic vision and sophisticated, fresh interpretation of mariachi classics continues to win the hearts of contemporary and traditional mariachi music fans alike. Flor de Toloache made music history in 2017, when their critically-acclaimed studio album “Las Caras Lindas” was awarded the Latin GRAMMY Award for Best Ranchero/Mariachi Album—making them the first female recipients of the award.

Here’s to the many generations of fearless women who’ve paved the way for the women of today and tomorrow to dream, thrive and continue breaking barriers!

Concert season is by far our favorite time of the year here at Levitt. What better way to welcome in the summer season than by enjoying an evening of free, live music under the stars?

The sound of free Levitt concerts is already filling the air in nine communities across the country: Arlington, Texas; Bethlehem, Pa.; Denison, Texas, where veteran Levitt performer Brave Combo (the GRAMMY-winning mosh-pit polka band pictured above) delighted Levitt AMP Denison audiences last weekend; Greensboro, N.C.; Jacksonville, Ill.; Memphis, Tenn.Ocala, Fla.; Santa Fe, NM; and Stevens Point, Wis.

Next month, Levitt Pavilion Denver will open to the public, making it the seventh permanent outdoor music venue in the Levitt network. Levitt Pavilion Denver is being heralded as the centerpiece to Ruby Hill Park’s revitalization, an expansive yet underused 83-acre park located in Southwest Denver. Next month, this formerly underused public space will become a communal hub where Denverites can come together on lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy free, live music under the stars.

Find out which artists will be performing as part of Levitt Pavilion Denver’s inaugural concert season.

Not familiar with Pokémon GO? Check out the video below.

I learned about Pokémon GO about a week after its early July launch when two of my cousins—one 5-year-old and one 25-year-old—told me (with equal enthusiasm) that they were headed to a local park to capture some Pokémon. I was struck by their shared excitement to discover something new in a park they had both visited countless times before. When asked about the game’s appeal, the 25-year-old explained how “cool it is to see so many people out in [his] neighborhood” and referenced many landmarks the game had led him to discover. As Project for Public Spaces Fellow of Digital Placemaking Dan LaTorre explains, “Gamifying gives people a feeling of new permissions to explore the city.” Continue reading
