Asian Americans make up the fastest growing population in the U.S. and have been involved in the American music scene since the early 20th century during the Jazz Age. While a few artists, like Chinese American cellist Yo-Yo Ma, have become household names, many others left the U.S. to create music for Asian markets due to American media’s lack of acceptance for Asian American musicians. That’s starting to change with the rise of social media and popularity of indie music, which has helped springboard acts who were once considered outsiders in mainstream entertainment.

Over the years, Levitt concerts have featured Asian American artists performing an array of genres for music lovers nationwide and will continue to do so this concert season. In honor of Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month, here are five Asian and Pacific-Islander American artists who have performed on or are about to grace Levitt stages. You might remember last summer’s Spotlight Series feature on Brave Combo, the genre-bending polka band that has wowed audiences for over 35 years. This week they’re highlighted in a new Meet the Artist video filmed at Levitt Pavilion Arlington, where the band has performed eight times including on the venue’s opening day back in 2008. Last year, over 6,000 undiscovered musicians from across the country submitted entries for NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Contest. The prize? A gig at one of music’s most unlikely concert venues: the desk of All Songs Considered host Bob Boilen.

Since its start in 2008, the Tiny Desk Concert Series has become an online phenomenon, with nearly 500 performances boasting millions of viewers who tune in to see old favorites and up-and-coming artists alike nearly every week. Musicians across a wide range of genres have visited the Tiny Desk, including Adele, T-Pain, Yo-Yo Ma and over 40 artists who’ve performed on Levitt stages across the country.

Not many people can say heatstroke is what inspired them to start writing music—but Luke Wade can. 

The Texas-born singer-songwriter and Season 7 finalist on The Voice began writing music after suffering from temporary brain damage and amnesia as a teenager after a high school cross country meet in the sweltering heat. Writing music became a way to heal, and Wade has been following his dream of becoming a professional musician ever since. 

This Friday, Wade returns to Levitt Arlington for a free show kicking off UT Arlington Weekend at the Levitt. Learn more about the soul singer—who has been compared to the likes of Ray LaMontagne and who also performed at Levitt SteelStacks and Levitt Westport earlier this summer—before the show. Growing up with GRAMMY-winning zydeco artist Terrance Simien as her father, Marcella René Simien always knew she wanted to be on stage. By the age of 14, she was performing and touring with her father’s band, appearing at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Festival International de Louisiane and the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise, among others.

Now a professional musician in her own right, Marcella wowed audiences in her hometown of Lafayette, La., at the Levitt AMP Music Series earlier this summer. And in the coming week, she will play two more Levitt stages with her band, Marcella and Her Lovers: Levitt Shell on September 13 and the Levitt AMP Cleveland Music Series on September 16.  Continue reading

Black Violin

This past summer, audiences in six Levitt cities across the country experienced Black Violin’s electrifying fusion of hip-hop and classical as part of the free 2015 Levitt National Tour.

StereotypesIn less than two weeks, the duo—violinist Kevin “Kev Marcus” Sylvester and violist Wil Baptiste—will release the follow-up to their previous albums, 2012’s Classically Trained and 2008’s Black Violin, with their major label debut Stereotypes on Universal Music Classics.
