Tonight, noted activist, theologian, author, documentary filmmaker and musician, Reverend Osagyefo (oh-sah-GG-fo) Uhuru (ooh-WHO-roo) Sekou (SAY-koo) wraps up the 2019 Levitt AMP Trenton Music Series with his Nashville blues band The Freedom Fighters—and next week, they’ll take their fiery fusion down to Chattanooga, Tenn. (9/12) and Berea, Ky. (9/13). Born in St. Louis, and raised in the rural Arkansas Delta, Rev. Sekou’s fervent anthems weave together Arkansas Delta Blues, Memphis soul, 1970s funk and gospel. Drawing upon his background in music, ministry and advocacy, Rev. Sekou preaches high-energy messages of hope and empowerment, steeped in Southern soul. Continue reading

The Brevet_3Today’s entry in our Spotlight Series features SoCal folk-rock outfit The Brevet, who will be headlining the final concert of the 2019 Levitt AMP Carson City Music Series tomorrow night in Carson City, NV! The band’s sound, which they describe as “epic Americana,” is an expansive musical experience perfectly suited for a late-summer performance on the Levitt stage.

In today’s Spotlight Series we’re featuring the LowDown Brass Band, a Chicago-based ensemble that takes the traditional sounds of the Big Easy to new heights with infusions of jazz, blues, funk and hip-hop. The group’s hard-hitting horn section, groovy sousaphone and funkified drums create an atmosphere that fans describe as “an absolute party,” and the recent addition of ferocious poet MC Billa Camp’s energizing rhymes has made their live performances even more explosive. After lighting up Levitt AMP Sheboygan earlier this month, the LowDown Brass Band will be bringing the funk to Levitt Pavilion SteelStacks tonight for another pumped-up performance.

It’s that time of year again! Last month marked the beginning of free Levitt concerts nationwide, with a show-stopping performance by country crooner Deryl Dodd at Levitt Pavilion Arlington. This summer and fall, more than 550 free concerts will take place in 26 towns and cities across America, both at permanent Levitt venues and Levitt AMP sites.  We love seeing friends, families and neighbors of all ages and backgrounds come together on Levitt lawns to enjoy free music under the stars (many showing off their #musicmoves on our feed!). With concerts in full swing, read on to check out all the great places free Levitt concerts are taking place in 2019!

Permanent Levitt Venues

Each permanent outdoor Levitt music venue presents 50 free concerts every year and is managed, programmed and supported by a Friends of Levitt nonprofit partner, with Levitt Los Angeles run by the Foundation. This year marks the opening of the stunning Levitt Shell Sioux Falls, which launches its inaugural free summer concert series June 14! Click on a venue to see artist lineups and more!

Mark your calendars—the countdown is on for the GRAMMY-winning mariachi of Flor De Toloache! The all-female, critically acclaimed mariachi group and veterans of the Levitt stage will headline this summer’s 2019 Levitt National Tour. Levitt audiences eager to hear more from Flor De Toloache before the Levitt National Tour this summer are in luck: there’s a new album on the way this spring, and the first single “Besos de Mezcal” (featuring Camilo Lara, the artist behind the music of animated film “Coco”) was released last month! And be sure to keep an eye out for an upcoming collaboration with Platinum-selling R&B artist Miguel…see you on the Levitt lawn!

Devon Gilfillian

Fresh off the heels of a rousing performance that launched Levitt Shell’s fall season, soulful rocker Devon Gilfillian heads to Levitt Pavilion Dayton—where he’ll perform as part of the venue’s inaugural season tomorrow night! Described as “one of the most exciting young artists in Nashville’s burgeoning soul scene” by Rolling Stone, Levitt Dayton concertgoers are in for an unforgettable night of sweltering blues guitar riffs, rich gospel vocals and velvet-smooth jams that pack a punch. This will be Gilfillian’s third Levitt performance of the season, following performances in Memphis and Middlesboro, Ky., earlier this summer. Continue reading

While many students across the country are already heading back to school, there are many festive evenings of free Levitt concerts left to enjoy. Tonight, genre-busting troubadours Making Movies bring their eclectic fusion of rock, cumbia, and spoken word to Levitt AMP Trenton. Known for their contagious Afro-Latin rhythms, socially-conscious messages, and heartfelt performances, Levitt AMP Trenton concertgoers are in for a fantastic show tonight. The members of Making Movies are no strangers to Levitt. Tonight’s show will mark the band’s fifth appearance on a Levitt stage—with past performances in Sheboygan, Wis. (2018), Santa Fe, N.M. Each week on our blog, we’ll be shining the spotlight on an artist performing on a Levitt stage that week. Throughout the series, you’ll get to know some of the talented performers bringing music of all genres to Levitt audiences across the country.

To get us all in the mood for summer fun, we’re launching the 2018 Spotlight series with twangin’ Texas cowpunk rockers, the Vandoliers, who’ll take the Levitt AMP Galva stage Sunday night!
