We all know that music brings people together—just head to any Levitt venue during concert season and you’ll see people of all ages and backgrounds dancing, picnicking and enjoying free, live music under the stars.

But what happens when music pushes people apart?

That’s what Johnathan Chen, founder and CEO of nonprofit record label OneReasonRecordings, experienced when he moved from Texas to New York City in 2012. Although he saw homeless people nearly everywhere he went (there are over 60,000 in the city), he noticed that few passerby ever reached out to those most in need. Since many of these commuters were wearing headphones, Chen assumed music was making social issues easier to ignore.

Inspired, Chen, then a freshman at NYU, founded OneReasonRecordings (ORR), with the mission to promote music as a tool to combat social problems. Continue reading

Ever found yourself on a beautiful grassy hill with the urge to throw your hands into the air and belt out, “The hills are alive…with the sound of music?” As music lovers—who happen to be particularly fond of filling beautiful green open spaces with melodious sounds—we’ve experienced this feeling many times.

50 years ago today—March 2, 1965—the one and only Julie Andrews sang her way into people’s hearts across the nation with the U.S. premiere of the Academy Award-winning film, The Sound of Music. Continue reading

Iconic American songs like Wilson Pickett’s “Mustang Sally,” and Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again” are only two of the many songs that celebrate car culture; each sing of the thrill of hopping in your car and hitting the road. Here in Los Angeles, a city that loves its cars, we’re immersed in car culture–for better or worse. Having a car is a luxury that brings a new type of freedom and excitement…but what happens when the number of cars on the road increases while the amount of road space for those vehicles remains the same?

This brings us to the subject of today’s post: Mumbai.

SundanceSince Robert Redford founded it in 1978, the annual Sundance Film Festival has become a fixture in launching independent cinema. Many films have gone on to win or be nominated for awards after being screened at the famous Park City, Utah, festival—most recently, Academy Award “Best Picture” nominee Whiplash, which tells the story of a young jazz drummer and his formidable mentor.

This year, like Whiplash, a number of films and documentaries at Sundance feature music in a prominent role. We’re excited for these projects, inspired by artists like Daft Punk, Nina Simone, Nirvana and more: Continue reading

Ruby Hill Park (where Levitt Denver will open in 2016) boasts 88 acres of land, breathtaking 360 degree views of the city and, at the moment, a free snow-filled winter wonderland for urban skiers, snowboarders, inner tubers and sledders. The name of this playground for snow enthusiasts: Ruby Hill Rail Yard.

With the snow-covered Rocky Mountains right in Denver’s backyard, why is a little mid-city snow so exciting? Continue reading

RecordStoreDay
Looking for an alternative Black Friday experience? Try your local record store!

Record Store Day (RSD) was April 19 this year, but the next phase of the movement to support independent record stores begins next week. On November 28, participating shops across the country will release a number of limited special editions of books, picture discs, and 7″ and 12″ vinyl “to celebrate both the pieces themselves and the special indie record stores who carry them.” Continue reading

Myla Smith Live at the Levitt ShellThe Shell in Overton Park, Memphis, reborn as Levitt Shell in 2008, has seen a lot over the years, including historic performances by Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and most recently Aaron Neville. Now it’s the setting for a new live double album, Live at the Levitt Shell, by emerging folk/pop singer-songwriter Myla Smith

While exploring options to follow up her 2013 release Hiding Places, Smith was offered a performance at an Easter Eve concert at Levitt Shell and couldn’t resist the idea of recording a live album at the iconic space.  Continue reading

Even if you’re not actively looking for it, the influence of mobile technology on our daily lives is obvious. Whether it’s an ad campaign for a next generation product, a scannable QR code on a flyer, or the person in front of you at the coffee shop scrolling through headlines on their smartphone, it’s hard to escape the ubiquity of cell phone usage. According to a 2013 poll by Pew Research Center, over 90% of adults in the U.S. now own cell phones, a vast increase from 65% in 2004. Of those phones, 56% are considered “smart,” which opens a whole new world of possibilities with just one word: apps.

Levitt MusicAs phones become increasingly indispensable, so too has the humble app. There are applications for nearly everything these days, from the mundane (email, navigation) to the niche (metal detectors, cuddle seekers in your local area), to the downright bizarre (Pimple Popper, a game where you, well, pop pimples for fun). When it comes to music, our first love here at Levitt, apps can help improve our listening experiences, allow us to create hooks or beats on the fly and expose us to new artists or genres that we might not have heard otherwise.

Just like when you’ve discovered an awesome song and you just have to tell the world, we’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite cool, lesser-known music apps to share with you! Whether they’re made for creation, discovery or organization, we hope one of these apps can add a little more music to your lives. Try them out, let us know what you think and happy downloading! LA MarathonThere’s something really special about a marathon.

When they’re held in cities, marathons take runners to places where they sometimes might not be able to go and might not usually be welcome. This partly explains why joggers love heading out in the early morning when the streets are quiet and a solitary sunrise awaits: the alternative, attempting a run during rush hour in Chicago’s loop, Paris’ Champs-Élysées or pretty much anywhere in Manhattan, is like a maddening live-action video game for everyone involved.
