Last Sunday, John Legend and Common’s collaborative work “Glory,” the soulful gospel-rap blend from the Martin Luther King Jr. biopic Selma, won the Golden Globe for “Best Original Song.” Yesterday, it also picked up an Academy Award nomination in the same category—and coincidentally, it happened to be the day that would have been King’s 86th birthday.

Legend and Common are among many artists whose music has been inspired by King’s activism, such as Stevie Wonder, Queen and U2. Continue reading

Looking for an alternative Black Friday experience? Try your local record store!

Record Store Day (RSD) was April 19 this year, but the next phase of the movement to support independent record stores begins next week. On November 28, participating shops across the country will release a number of limited special editions of books, picture discs, and 7″ and 12″ vinyl “to celebrate both the pieces themselves and the special indie record stores who carry them.” Continue reading

Record Store Day 2014 logoRecord Store Day just seems to be getting bigger and bigger.

Started in April 2007, Record Store Day (RSD) encourages music fans everywhere to support their friendly, local, independent record stores. On the third Saturday of April (that’s tomorrow, April 19!), record stores around the world hold special events like concerts and listening parties, and labels and artists release short-run vinyl and cassettes to commemorate the occasion.
