Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat (Sheep), Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig…which are you? If you were born in the years 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998 or 2010, congrats Tiger—2022 happens to be your lucky year! The Chinese New Year, or the Lunar New Year (throughout Asia), is a cultural celebration based on the lunar calendar, which begins today! The date of the new year changes annually, yet typically falls on the second New Moon after the winter solstice. So how will you celebrate?

Depending on your personal animal sign and how it interacts with the Tiger, your 2022 could be a smooth year, or a bumpy one. Knowing your sign and what to expect could help you navigate the road ahead. But, why not start off the Lunar New Year by celebrating? Wear red for luck or decorate your house with lanterns. Eat at your favorite restaurant in Chinatown and attend a dragon parade. Set off some fireworks and sing a Chinese New Year song. Within traditional Chinese beliefs, it is said that sounds, especially music, harmonize the universe—we couldn’t agree more!

Just as Western Christmas carols are covered by artists from all genres, so is the most popular Chinese New Year song, Gong Xi, Gong Xi. Translating as “Congratulations, Congratulations,” which is also a popular New Year’s greeting, the catchy tune has become synonymous with the holiday. Gong Xi, Gong Xi was originally written in 1945 by Chen Gexin (under the pen name of Qing Yu) in Shanghai to celebrate the liberation of China from Japan at the end of World War II. The cheerful lyrics look toward the end of a cold and dark winter with the excitement for the arrival of spring. Take a listen to the fun playlist we’ve selected, with versions ranging from the once popular sounds of Yao Li, the “silver voice of Shanghai”, to a modern take by Portland-based Pink Martini to a House beats mix by Chinese American DJ ADAMII. Xin nian kuai le! We hope your year is filled with luck and good fortune, and, good music!

Curious which animal you are? According to Chinese astrology, the date of your birth determines your animal sign, whose characteristics are believed to influence not only worldly events, but your personality and compatibility with others, plus even romance, health and wealth. Although your animal sign recurs every 12 years, each generation is further affected by the five elements of Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth, which adds an even deeper dimension to your character traits.
