Levitt concert series continue to roll out throughout the nation, with music lovers making their way to nine Levitt lawns this past weekend for free, live music, enjoying an array of genres spanning from bluegrass to mariachi. Audiences in Carson City, Denison, Greensboro, Midvale and New Albany were each treated to a free Levitt AMP concert while Levitt Pavilion Arlington, Levitt Shell Memphis and Levitt Pavilion SteelStacks hosted back-to-back nights of free shows. The members of GRAMMY-winning Chicano rock group Quetzal (who have performed multiple times at Levitt Pavilion Los Angeles and Levitt Pavilion Pasadena) are no strangers to activism. Formed over 20 years ago, the band was born out of the East Los Angeles Chicano music scene with a mission to use music for social change. Asian Americans make up the fastest growing population in the U.S. and have been involved in the American music scene since the early 20th century during the Jazz Age. While a few artists, like Chinese American cellist Yo-Yo Ma, have become household names, many others left the U.S. to create music for Asian markets due to American media’s lack of acceptance for Asian American musicians. That’s starting to change with the rise of social media and popularity of indie music, which has helped springboard acts who were once considered outsiders in mainstream entertainment.

Over the years, Levitt concerts have featured Asian American artists performing an array of genres for music lovers nationwide and will continue to do so this concert season. In honor of Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month, here are five Asian and Pacific-Islander American artists who have performed on or are about to grace Levitt stages. You might remember last summer’s Spotlight Series feature on Brave Combo, the genre-bending polka band that has wowed audiences for over 35 years.
