Spotlight: Gangstagrass

At the unexpected intersection of hip-hop and bluegrass, you’ll find the genre-busting New York City five-piece, Gangstagrass—who is bringing their fresh musical fusion to Levitt AMP Stevens Point tonight and Levitt AMP Galva this Sunday! Seamlessly weaving together banjo, fiddle and soaring three-part-harmonies with rap vocals and beats, Gangstagrass creates a one-of-a-kind sound Rolling Stone describes as “…the best argument yet for a rap and country music marriage.”

The band came to life in 2006, when Brooklyn-based producer Rench—who was simultaneously making beats for rappers and hosting country music nights—was inspired to combine elements from rap and classic bluegrass. Shortly after, Rench was asked to create a theme song for the FX Network TV Series Justified. The resulting track, “Long Hard Times to Come,” was met with widespread acclaim and a 2010 EMMY Award nomination for “Best Theme Song.” Since then, Gangstagrass has built upon their momentum—touring internationally, releasing two Billboard Bluegrass chart-topping albums (Pocket Full Of Fire: Gangstagrass Live, 2019; American Music, 2015), and earning glowing reviews from The Wall Street Journal (2010), Rolling Stone Country (2017) and Forbes (2018).
