Spotlight Series: Dustbowl Revival’s “Never Had To Go”

Dustbowl Revival

Dick Van Dyke’s still got #musicmoves!

Last month, the 89-year-old Mary Poppins star made a delightful surprise appearance in the music video for “Never Had To Go,” The Dustbowl Revival’s first single off their new album With A Lampshade On. Filmed in his Malibu home, Van Dyke’s spry footwork and infectious sense of humor helped the video go viral, landing over 2 million views on YouTube.

Van Dyke and his wife Arlene (who also appears in the video) have been longtime fans of the Venice, Ca.-based eight-piece Americana band, which features a washboard, ukulele, mandolin, fiddle and more. After meeting accidentally at a private event years ago, they continued to keep in touch, which is how Dustbowl Revival got the idea to collaborate on their newest video.

“As we were brain storming a way to shoot music videos for our new album, our drummer Josh joked that we should drop Dick a line and see if he would join us for something,” said guitarist and vocalist Zachary Lupetin in an interview with The Bluegrass Situation. “To my surprise, he and his wife were totally down. They are super down to earth, and Dick and I spoke on the phone several times about jazz and how music gets him fired up.”

Watch the video and get a taste of what to expect when Dustbowl Revival—named LA Weekly’s Best Live Band in 2013—brings their mix of old school bluegrass, gospel pre-war blues and swing to Levitt Pavilion Pasadena for the third time this Saturday for a special 4th of July performance!
