Meet the Artist: Rocky Dawuni

Our Meet the Artist series is your backstage pass to some of your favorite Levitt artists. You’ve cheered them on at Levitt venues across the country, now go behind the scenes and learn who they are, where they come from and what inspires them.

This past summer, international Ghanaian reggae artist, Rocky Dawuni sent positive musical vibes all across southern California with his performances at Levitt Pasadena and Levitt Los Angeles. It marked his third time performing at Levitt Los Angeles, and second time taking the stage at Levitt Pasadena. We caught up with this talented artist at a recent Levitt concert, captured here in his Meet the Artist video. Here are just a few reasons why we love Dawuni:

  1. His extraordinary musicianship: In addition to winning the prestigious Best African Artist Award at the 2011 World Music Awards, Dawuni has performed with musical legends from around the globe, including Stevie Wonder, Peter Gabriel, Jason Mraz, Sharon Jones and Janelle Monae.
  2. His deep-rooted passion for social change: Dawuni’s thought-provoking music reflects his desire to make the world a better place. His actions are helping to make that dream a reality. In addition to serving as Ghana’s Tourism Ambassador and World Music Ambassador for MUSIGA (Musician’s Union of Ghana), Dawuni also serves as an ambassador for the United Nations Global Alliance, working alongside notable figures like actress Julia Roberts and chef José Andres.
  3. His dedication to creating innovative musical fusions: Dawuni’s music brings together cultural influences from across the globe. To hear his latest cross-cultural creation, check out his newly released single, “American Thriller” off his forthcoming album, Branches of the Same Tree. This remix was created in collaboration with Jeremy Sole of the Los Angeles radio station KCRW.

“My music is a fusion of Afro-beat, reggae music, soul and positive attitude. It’s a gumbo of different influences,” Dawuni explains in our interview. So, the next time you find yourself in need of musical nourishment, take a moment to pause, breathe, and treat your soul to some of Dawuni’s musical gumbo.
