Meet the Artist: Quetzal

We are tremendously lucky to say that GRAMMY-winning Quetzal has graced the stages of Levitt Los Angeles and Levitt Pasadena nearly ten times.

“We keep coming back because they have the best sound, the best staff, the best audience,” says lead singer Martha González.

Every time the Los Angeles-based group plays the Levitt, González’s captivating presence and the tremendous musicianship of the six-piece band make the performance one of the season highlights. You can’t make a move in any direction on the Levitt lawn without seeing lose-yourself-in-the-rhythm dancing.

Quetzal is often mentioned in the same breath as groups like Ozomatli and Los Lobos. “Some people call our music Chicano rock, but it goes simply beyond the Chicano experience,” says group founder and guitarist Quetzal Flores.

Quetzal’s impressive and eclectic musical range can take the group from King Crimson-inspired prog jams to laments that could be mistaken for Susana Baca. And their political, social and cultural awareness and strong feminist stance are what make them a unique voice among today’s Latin music scene.

In 2012, Quetzal released their fifth full-length album, Imaginaries, on the legendary Smithsonian Folkways label, winning the band their first GRAMMY Award in 2013 for Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album.

So with this, we’d like to introduce you to a Levitt favorite in this new Meet the Artist video: Quetzal.
